Avoiding Pesticide Exposure

Dear [insert name],

I am writing to encourage you to consider adopting a policy that eliminates or reduces the use of pesticides in public areas that are within your jurisdiction. I believe that adopting such a policy would not only better protect the health of our community, but would show that the [insert name of city/county/school/etc.] cares about the health of its residents.

As you know, many pesticides are known to cause cancer, reproductive harm and nervous system disorders. Others are known to aggravate asthma or induce fever-like symptoms. Even though not everyone is affected by pesticides, some can have serious reactions to even minimal pesticide exposure.

Many cities, counties and schools are taking it upon themselves to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policies, or practices that reduce their reliance on conventional pesticides. IPM policies don't always eliminate pesticide use altogether, but they do look at other methods to control pest problems, including the use of least toxic alternatives.

The reduction of pesticides by the [insert name of city/county/school/etc.] would be beneficial to everyone, and would result in a safer and less toxic environment. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

[your name]
