Avoiding Pesticide Exposure

Pesticide Use on the Central Coast

Each year in California, hundreds of millions of pounds of pesticides are applied to crops, soil and water, homes, schools, and workplaces. In the Tri-Counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo, 13,104,493 pounds of pesticides were applied to agricultural lands in 2004.

For detailed information on pesticide use records by county and year, visit http://www.cdpr.ca.gov/docs/pur/purmain.htm.

*It is important to note that the figures cited only reflect agricultural pesticide use. Residential pesticide use is nearly impossible to track. Pesticide use at public and private institutions must be obtained from them directly.

Pesticide Use Near Central Coast Schools

CCEHP'S FIRST REPORT EXAMINES PESTICIDE USE NEAR SCHOOLS
CCEHP’s first public report, “Too Close for Comfort: Pesticide Use Near Five Santa Barbara County Schools,” was released to the public in January 2004. This report, compiled from June 2003-January 2004, looks at pesticide use within 1.5 miles of five schools in the agricultural region of Santa Barbara County. It concludes by offering recommendations to schools, growers, elected officials, and parents to better protect school aged children from pesticide exposure.
